GUNMEN have killed 11 people and wounded at least 31 in a rampage at Fort Hood military base in Texas.

The primary gunman, a soldier armed with two handguns, was shot dead in
the aftermath of the attack, taking the overall death toll to 12.

He has been named as Army Major Malik Nadal Hasan. The Associated Press
said a defence official had said he was a mental health professional -
an Army psychologist or psychiatrist.

Army investigators have identified two other suspects, also soldiers, according to Fort Hood commanding general Bob Cone.

"It's a terrible tragedy, it’s stunning," he said.

The Fort Hood base remains in lockdown and the FBI is running background checks on the suspected gunmen.

The bloodbath unfolded at the Soldier Readiness Centre, where troops
undergo final medical checks prior to their deployment, Lieutenant Cone
said.

He said there was no clear motive and that one civilian police officer was among the dead.

Local congressman John Carter told MSNBC television: "I had a man on the
scene, who is my regional director and former chaplin at Fort Hood,
waiting to go to a graduation ceremony when a soldier came running up to
him saying, 'Sir, don't go over there. They are - somebody is shooting
over there','' Mr Carter said.

"When the soldier ran by him, he saw the soldier didn't know it, but he was wounded.

"So, he went into the building and they stopped him, because he had been shot.

"He heard small arms and some rifle fire while he was there and that he
thought they had one person that they had caught but there may be more,
he didn't know.

"He understood there was more than one, that was all he said.''

Fort Hood is the largest US military base in the world and had been
working to rehabilitate many soldiers suffering from post-traumatic
stress syndrome, he said.

Army personnel told a Fox news affiliate they were not sure if the victims were civilians or military personnel.

A message on Fort Hood's website - the headquarters of the Army 3rd
Corps, the 4th Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division - said it
was closed, but gave no further details. All those units have seen
extensive duty in Iraq.

"Effective immediately. Fort Hood is closed. Organisations/units are
instructed to execute a 100 per cent accountability of all personnel.
This is not a drill. It is an emergency situation," the website said.

Schools in the area were also on lockdown, MSNBC said.

President Barack Obama said the shooting was "a horrific outburst of violence".

"My immediate prayers are with the families of the fallen."

AN official Taliban publication warns Australia that it will have to
assimilate into a dominant Asia or face the prospect of being
overpowered and forced to take population overspill from Asia.

The choice is spelled out in the latest issue of the online Taliban
monthly magazine, Al Sumud (Steadfastness), whose lead article offers a
sweeping view of a post-war order in which a Taliban-ruled Afghanistan
becomes a moral pivot for a pan-Asian renaissance that will coincide
with the decline of Western power.

"The end of European leadership in the world will place the white
settler diaspora in Australia before two choices," writes the author,
Mustafa Hamid, a former senior al-Qaeda member who in 2001 married
Australian Rabiah Hutchinson, a Sydney mother with links to Islamic
extremists.

"It can either return to its motherland in Europe or reconcile with its
Asian surroundings and assimilate into it as a wealthy and active
member."

Man 'put own kids in porn videos'

A PERTH man is being interviewed by police for allegedly using his own children in pornographic videos.

A police spokesman said the man had not been arrested but Child
protection Squad Officers planned to search his home later today.

No further information was available at the moment.

West Australian police also announced
the end of child pornography operation
Keiko,


which had led to the arrest of 18 people,
including two police officers, a customs officer,
a naval officer and a teacher, since December.

WA police received information from
Interpol, Europol, Belgian and Dutch police,
US authorities, Queensland police and the Australian Federal Police
which led to 24 search warrants being executed and 18 arrests.

Detectives discovered more than 500,000 child pornography images, 2500
DVDs, thumb drives and 705 written stories depicting abuse between adult
men and children, who ranged from three months to 16 years old.

"No matter what you do, everything's traceable on your computer," Detective Jamie Merritt said.

"No matter how long it takes, you will be caught, brought before the courts and punished."

The 18 people arrested across WA were identified by overseas police who
found their names on the computers of pedophiles in their own countries
and were able to show they had been sent the images.

The same information was used to arrest an unknown number of people in other Australian states and territories.

Of the 18 people arrested in WA,
one was a supplier of child porn images
through a website membership.
He received a
two-year [i]suspended sentence
for his crime.

The 17 other men received the images from various internet sources.

"Some people like keeping them (images), they like sharing them with
other people, and they brag about how many images they keep," Det
Merritt said.

One man was found with 150,000 child porn images on his personal computer.

None of the children in the images have been identified, but they are not believed to be Australian.

The last person arrested in relation to
the now-closed operation Keiko

was detained last Wednesday.

[size=25]Torquay fossil sheds light on whales

A 25-million-year-old fossil
found at Torquay in the 1930s
has thrown new light
on the origin of giants of the deep
such as the blue whale.

Museum Victoria palaeobiologist Dr Erich Fitzgerald
made the discoveries after re-examining the bones
of an ancient baleen whale that were found at Torquay in 1932.

Dr Fitzgerald's study, which is published in the Zoological Journal
of the Linnean Society, is centred on mammalodon colliveri,
a primitive toothed baleen whale, one of a group of whales
that includes the largest animal ever,
the blue whale.

Dr Fitzgerald's concluded the ancient baleen whale
was a "bottom feeding mudsucker'.'

While that may not sound flattering to the layman,
in paleobiological terms it is quite significant.

Dr Fitzgerald's view supports Charles Darwin's speculation
in The Origin of Species, that some of the earliest baleen whales
may have been suction feeders, and that their mud grubbing
served as a precursor to the filter feeding of today's giants of the deep.

"The new research shows that mammalodon is a dwarf,
having evolved into a relatively tiny form from larger ancestors,"
Dr Fitzgerald said.

Mammalodon belongs to the same family as janjucetus hunderi,
fossils of which were found near Torquay by a Drysdale family
in July this year.

"This (whale) family is unique to south-east Australia,
their fossils only being discovered in Victoria," he said.

"Clearly, the seas off southern Australia
were a cradle for the evolution
of a variety of tiny, weird whales
that seem to have lived nowhere else."[/size]

AN ABORIGINAL Dreaming story
about a star crashing to earth
with a noise like thunder
has led to the discovery of
an ancient meteorite crater in central Australia.

A Sydney astronomer, Duane
Hamacher, found the bowl-shaped crater in Palm Valley, about 130
kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, by searching on Google Earth.

He was inspired to look there after learning
of traditional stories told
by the local Arrernte people about a star
that had fallen into a waterhole
called Puka in the valley.

Mr Hamacher, a PhD candidate at Macquarie University,
said that reality matching the Dreaming story
could be a case of pure chance. '
'But if so, it's an incredible coincidence,'' he said.

He is part of a team led by CSIRO astronomer Ray Norris
that is exploring the possibility that
Aborigines were the world's first astronomers.

Traditional Aboriginal wisdom about the heavens was impressive,
Mr Hamacher said.

''It is impossible to survive on a continent like this for 50,000 years
and not have an intimate knowledge of the natural world around you,
including the night sky,'' he said.

He searched historical records for Aboriginal stories
with references to comets, meteors and cosmic impacts,
and looked for matching astronomical events.

The Palm Valley crater, which the team proposes to name Puka,
was probably formed millions of years ago, so people could not
have witnessed the impact.

''We found evidence of shocked quartz,
which is only produced when there is a substantial impact,''
Mr Hamacher said.

They also determined that the structure was bowl
shaped under the surface, which could not be explained by erosion.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine Tuesday of "abuse" of
Russian oil transits via its territory but predicted both sides would
abide by contractual obligations
to keep supply flowing to Europe.

"We are ready to deliver (oil),
we have a contract,
but if any of the transit countries abuse,
what can you do?" Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.

"We have a contract to deliver oil.
I think that this contract will be fulfilled," he added.

His comments came after Ukraine said Monday it wanted to change the
terms of its 2004 transit contract with Russia for oil shipments via
Ukrainian territory to the European Union.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin said
Russian oil shipments to Europe through Ukraine will continue without
disruption as the two countries renegotiate their transit agreement.

"We expect that there will be no problems with the transit," Sechin was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.

Ukraine had sought and obtained an increase in the tariffs Russia pays to transit its oil through Ukrainian pipelines,
but the two sides had still not agreed
on how much oil -- subject to those tariffs --
Russia would "guarantee"
to pump through Ukraine, officials said.

Sechin said Russia was still negotiating with Ukraine
on the final terms of the new deal.

Disputes between Russia and Ukraine on pricing and transit of Russian natural gas shipped to EU clients have caused serious supply disruptions in recent years, but Ukrainian officials gave assurances that transit would continue even if talks were not concluded by the end of the year.

EU sources in Brussels also played down fears
of another looming energy dispute
between Russia and Ukraine that
could have an impact on EU energy supplies.

China discovers tomb
of ancient legendary ruler

Chinese archaeologists believe they have found
a nearly 1,800-year-old tomb belonging to
the legendary ruler Cao Cao,
who was known as a cruel tyrant but also
a cunning military strategist and poet.

The tomb is located in central Henan province, not far from the Yellow
River and near the city of Anyang, where Cao Cao ruled the Kingdom of
Wei from 208 to 220, when he died at age 65, the state China Daily
reported Monday.

"Excavation has been going on for nearly one year, and we'll come up
with further evidence," the paper quoted Guan Qiang of the State
Administration of Cultural Heritage as saying.

"But even based on what we've got, we can tell for sure that the mausoleum belongs to Cao Cao."

Numerous articles found in the tomb are inscribed as "personal
belongings frequently used by the King Wu of Wei," Cao Cao's posthumous
title, it said.

Archaeologists have found the remains of three people in the tomb -- a
male around 60 years of age, believed to be Cao Cao, a female of about
50 and a second woman between 20 and 25, thought to be the king's wife
and escort.

The tomb was discovered about a year ago,
but only became known to authorities
after stone tablets carrying inscriptions of
"King Wu of Wei"
were seized from alleged tomb raiders,
the report said.

So far archaeologists have recovered over 250 relics
from the tomb which covers an area of 740 square metres
(8,000 square feet), an area befitting a burial plot
for someone of Cao Cao's stature, it said.

During his rise to power during the waning years of the Han Dynasty, Cao
Cao became known as a clever yet cruel tyrant who was also a military
genius.

His exploits form an important aspect of the 14th century historical
novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," known as one of China's greatest
literary works and a publication that remains widely read today.

Cao Cao remains a mainstay in Chinese culture
and is a frequent character in Peking opera
and historical theatre.

He was most recently portrayed in
director John Woo's blockbusters

RESCUERS pulled more bodies from
an avalanche of thick mud and rock
that buried a Brazilian hotel
filled with new year revellers,
as the death toll from heavy rains
in the south of the country rose to 63.

Twenty-eight people were killed in the tragedy at the hotel on Ilha
Grande - a resort island southwest of Rio - and a further six people
injured.

State officials said another landslide in the nearby city
of Angra dos Reis, south of Rio, left at least 13 people dead,
part of a series of mudslides brought on by incessant rains
that have killed at least 63 people across the state
of Rio de Janeiro since Wednesday and left dozens missing.

Authorities said the Hotel Sankay was full to capacity with about 40
guests, including children, ringing in the new year at the seaside
getaway on Bananal beach.

The complex is nestled at the bottom of a jungle-covered hillside,
which gave way before dawn on New Year's Day.

wrestled to remove tons of mud, rocks and thick tree trunks
in the hope of finding victims alive on Ilha Grande, but
"the chances of finding survivors are very slender", Mr Machado said.

"We cannot use heavy equipment because of the risk
of setting off new landslides," he said.

Authorities said rescue operations would likely continue
for a further 48 hours, adding that most of the bodies
recovered earlier were found on land. At least three more
had been pulled from the sea.

It is still not known if there were foreigners among the dead.

The Hotel Sankay, which opened in 1994,
catered to Brazilian and foreign tourists looking for
a beachside hideaway. The island, whose Bananal beach
can only be reached by water, is the largest in a
translucent bay studded with pristine tropical islands.

In the centre of Angra dos Reis,
a seaside town on the mainland
overlooking Ilha Grande Bay
about 150km south of Rio,
another landslide buried several houses,
killing at least 13,
according to a government statement.

Quake strikes near Solomon Islands

ABOUT 500 homes have been destroyed or damaged
by a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake that
rocked the Solomon Islands,
causing panic but no major injuries,
disaster officials say.

The National Disaster Management Office said it was possible
that thousands of people could be homeless,
but an exact assessment could not be made
until ground parties were able to reach remote islands today.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre
was 103km from the earthquake-prone
island town of Gizo
in the western Pacific archipelago, and local officials said
it triggered a small tsunami.

It was the largest of a swarm of tremors
centred on the area,
ignited by a 6.5 magnitude quake on Monday morning
and with eight strong aftershocks
between magnitude 4.9 and 5.7
over the following 12 hours.

"There are 500 homes that have been affected
but not all have been totally destroyed,''

The average home in the Solomon Islands
would house four to five people.

A patrol boat carrying water, food and tarpaulins
was dispatched from the capital Honiara
for the worst affected areas of Rendova island
and Marova Lagoon about 300km away, Mr Makaa said.

"The earthquake caused a small wave,
and a few people suffered minor injuries
as they ran away from the shore in panic,'' Makaa said.

The Disaster Management Office had also received radio reports
that some tourists received minor injuries on the conservation island
of Tetepare and there were houses destroyed at Marovo Lagoon,
both near Rendova.

"A patrol boat will be sent to the area with water, food and tarpaulins
as a precaution,'' Makaa said, adding residents on the outer islands
have been warned ``to remain alert for sea and tide fluctuations''
as aftershocks continue.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the same area nearly three years ago
killed 52 people, destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands.

The Hawaii-based tsunami warning centre said the latest earthquake
was powerful enough to have been destructive along coasts near the
epicentre but there was no wider threat.

"No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific although some other areas may experience small,
non-destructive, sea-level changes lasting up to several hours,''
the centre said in a bulletin.

Gizo, on Ghizo island, is the second largest town
in the Solomon Islands with a population of around 6000.

It is about 360km northwest of Honiara
which lies on the island of Guadalcanal,
where residents said they felt shakes but there was no damage.
