THE FORMER Australian of the year Patrick McGorry has
aborted a controversial trial of anti-psychotic drugs on children as
young as 15 who are ''at risk'' of psychosis, amid complaints the study
was unethical.

The Sun-Herald can reveal 13 international health experts
lodged a formal complaint calling for the trial not to go ahead.

They were concerned children who had not yet been
diagnosed with a psychotic illness would be unnecessarily given drugs
with potentially dangerous side effects.

Quetiapine, sold as Seroquel, has been linked to weight
gain and its manufacturer AstraZeneca, which was to fund the trial, last
month paid US$647 million ($622 million) to settle a lawsuit in the US,
alleging there was insufficient warning the drug may cause diabetes.

Professor McGorry, one of the Prime Minister's key mental
health advisers, planned the trial at Orygen Youth Health in Melbourne,
listing it on the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry last
March.

It was to investigate whether the drug would decrease or
delay the risk of people aged between 15 and 40 with early signs of
mental illness, developing a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia.

Last month, psychiatrists, psychologists and researchers
from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Britain and the US lodged a
complaint with the ethics committee of Melbourne Health, the umbrella
service which includes Orygen. They argued there was little evidence
the onset of psychosis can be prevented and it was potentially dangerous
to use anti-psychotics on those who merely had risk factors such as a
family history or deterioration in mental health, with evidence showing
up to 80 per cent will never develop a disorder.
Professor McGorry insists the decision to scrap the trial
was made in June and is unrelated to the complaint, which he said he
was only alerted to just over a week ago.

He said Orygen had to choose between the drug trial or
pursuing another trial using fish oil - which had proven useful as an
early intervention treatment for schizophrenia in a smaller study. It
opted for fish oil because it had less potential for side effects.

Melbourne Health's research ethics committee will still consider the complaint in September.

The Sun-Herald recently revealed a growing
backlash against the government's mental health reforms, with Professor
McGorry's peers claiming his youth early intervention model had been
''massively oversold''.

Associate Professor Geoff Stuart from La Trobe
University's school of psychological sciences, who signed the complaint,
said serious questions about the aborted trial remain.

''He [Professor McGorry] was willing to endorse a trial
which was exploring the use of anti-psychotic medication in an at-risk
group,'' he said. ''There's a major ethical issue about medicating four
people to supposedly save the fifth when you're not saving them anyway,
you're just masking their symptoms.

''We're talking about kids as young as 15 who could get a full dose of anti-psychotics and they're not psychotic.''

Anti-psychotics are vital but should not be used without clear evidence of the benefits, experts say.

has been uploaded on YouTube.

Police aretrying to trace
the account holder,
whose uploaded under
the alias "FreeMartinBryant".
The nine-minute evidence video
was stolen from the Tasmanian Police archive.
It contains graphic images of some of the 35 people shot dead at the
tourist spot, and police last night were trying to have it removed from
the internet.
FreeMartinBryant's user profile contains more than
20 videos pertaining to "conspiracies" surrounding the events of Port
Arthur, with several videos pertaining to Bryant's "innocence".
It is unknown how the footage was obtained,
but it also appeared on the internet in 2004 .
"Unfortunately this isn't the first time that this training video has turned up in the
wider community," Deputy Commissioner Scott Tilyard said.

"It has been known for some years that copies of the police training video have found their way into the public domain.
"A copy was located at a public tip in 2004, which led to an investigation."
Police Minister David O'Byrne said the footage was unlikely to have been stolen recently.
The video archive was upgraded in 2004.
"Tasmania Police changed their procedures after discovering the material may be
in the public domain, in 2004," he said. "I'm advised no breach has
occurred since then and that the current procedures for handling such
material are secure."
Police are greatly concerned about the effect the video could have on the wider community.
"It is highly distressing not only for the families of the victims, but for
the community, for these images to be available on the internet," Mr
Tilyard said.
Trauma psychologist Paul Stevenson, who worked for many years with many
of the survivors and victims' families, shared the disbelief and horror
about the posted video.

"To post this is a nasty, terrible thing to have occurred," the Brisbane-based consultant psychologist said.
"By watching or hearing it is a re-experience - all of those things people
felt at the time come back. The tragedy occurs all over.
"This is very distressing ...
a real worry for families of victims

post-traumatic stress."

Hobart has put on a chilly welcome for Dutch royals the Prince
of Orange Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima.

Premier Paul Lennon and Governor William Cox braved icy winds to
meet the royal couple from the Netherlands at Hobart airport on
Wednesday afternoon.

"We are very pleased and honoured that their royal highnesses
have chosen to include Tasmania in their Australian visit," Mr

POLICE are monitoring more than 70 youth and street gangs in Melbourne
in the wake of the British riots.

Assistant commissioner Steve Fontana, speaking exclusively to the Herald Sun, said the threat of isolated riots in Melbourne was real.

"We are certainly looking at what the lessons are from the UK. Yes, we've
still got a lot of work to do with our youth," he said.

"Could it happen in pockets? Yes, it could. Would it blow out across Melbourne? I doubt it."
Mr Fontana revealed:
LAW enforcement agencies across the nation are reviewing communications
laws to see what could be done to shut down the sort of riot inciting
SMS and texts that spread unrest in Britain and kept troublemakers a
step ahead of the police.

ABOUT 40 gangs are active in the city's northwest alone.

information isn't always available to police on the streets because of
the force's outdated database.
The force refuses to say exactly how many gangs

and suspected activities was rejected by the force before the UK riots.

discovered the names of 40 gangs from across the city, many of which

Mr Fontana said gang membership tended to be fluid, often with a small core.
He said many were short-lived and not all were violent, with some linked
to graffiti or other public nuisance activities rather than serious crime.

Some were racially or sport based while others were so-called "postcode" gangs,
which could be little more than local kids who took their schoolyard fights to the streets.

Gangs have been linked to assaults, stabbings and brawls, a Molotov cocktail attack on a train, the firebombing of a home and attacks with deadly weapons including machetes, tomahawks, Tasers, bars, baseball bats, bottles, and knuckle-dusters.

"They don't really contribute to a large volume of crime but there is concern
in some areas because of the nature and severity of the violence," Mr Fontana said.

"If they become violent we do target their activities.

When we have a problem we will focus on it."
He acknowledged police were at times targets of gang violence.
"We are often confronted with groups ... who want to take us on -
some of them are armed."

Melbourne's gangs regularly use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to organise and recruit.
"There's always potential to shut down networks but implications of that could
cost someone their life by taking away their ability to communicate in
an emergency," Mr Fontana said.

The force has also invested heavily in boosting its presence in trouble spots such as train stations.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the FBI,
the National Security Agency,
the Department of Homeland Security
and Citigroup exchanged information
to counter the attack,
which could have begun as long as a year ago.

The hackers, named in The Guardian as
the "Russian Business Network",
first gained notoriety several years ago
after masterminding a string of hi-tech crimes
including identity theft, fraud, spam
and child pornography.

Citigroup, the world's largest financial services company,
rejected any suggestion the FBI was investigating an incident
and denied that a raid of such proportions had taken place.

"Any allegation that the FBI is working on a case at Citigroup
involving a breach of Citi systems resulting in
tens of millions of dollars of losses is false," it said.

Scientists in Western Australia have uncovered fossils
which they say are the oldest evidence of life on earth.

A team of researchers from the University of WA
and Britain's Oxford University say they have proof
that the microscopic fossils, found at Strelley Pool
near Port Headland, are more than 3.4 billion years old.

The sulphur-based bacteria was found well preserved
between quartz sand grains in prehistoric sedimentary rocks,
Oxford University's Professor Martin Brasier said.

"We can be very sure about the age (of the fossils)
as the rocks were formed between two volcanic successions
that narrow the possible age down to a few tens of millions of years,"
he said in a statement.

The fossils are very clearly preserved, showing precise
cell-like structures all of a similar size, the research team said.

"At last we have good solid evidence
for life over 3.4 billion years ago.
It confirms there were bacteria
at this time, living without oxygen,"
Prof Brasier said.

"Such bacteria are still common today.
Sulphur bacteria are found in
smelly ditches, soil, hot springs, hydrothermal
vents -
anywhere where there's little free oxygen
and they can live off organic matter."

In recent years new scientific benchmarks have
been introduced that must be satisfied by researchers
before claims can be made about the age of fossils.
The West Australian fossils pass crucial tests including that
the forms seen in the rocks are biological and have not occurred
through some mineralisation process, Prof Brasier said.

"We're now making detailed comparisons with all other early microfossils,
and we're very optimistic for future finds," he said.
"The work also has implications for looking for life on other planets,
giving an indication of what evidence for such life might look like."

TWO men critically injured
in a backyard explosion
in Cannons Creek last night
were making a home-made explosive,
police say.
Neighbours felt shockwaves as the blast ripped through the area
about 11pm, with one of the men losing both of his legs in the accident.
The blast happened at a gathering of family and friends where the men in
their 20s were mixing commonly bought chemicals in a metal tin, with up
to 12 others standing back.
When asked if the explosion was caused by an amateur bomb,
Arson Squad Senior Detective Cameron Lunny said:
"I'd call it an improvised explosive device".
"It's been likened to a huge thunder clap from what I understand," he said.
He said the men were just experimenting with the chemicals, which the Herald Sun has chosen not to name, and that nothing sinister was at play.

"They were just having a bit of a muck around I think,'' Sen Det Lunny said.
"There's certainly no indication there was anything apart from experimenting."
The 23-year-old Cannons Creek man and 24-year-old from Pakenham were
standing over the mixture, trying to bury it when it went off.
No-one else was hurt and there was no property damaged,
despite the strength of the blast.
Next door neighbour Arlene Trevethan said the explosion created shockwaves.
"It just shook the house. I came out and I thought it was a fire or something,'' she said.
Another neighbour initially thought an earthquake had struck.
Local Robert Dudgeon said he had heard similar explosions in the past, which police are investigating.
"There were others here over the past month or so,'' he said.
"One night there were three in a row. Whether it's the same source or not, I don't know."
Sen Det Lunny pleaded with others not to experiment with dangerous chemicals.
"We're getting a lot recently of people undertaking mixing of chemicals.
It just goes to show it's not a very smart thing to do and I just plead to
the people thinking about this not to do it - it's very, very dangerous."
He didn't say whether the injured men had sourced the recipe from the internet or whether charges would be laid.
The two men were airlifted to Melbourne hospitals where they remain in critical conditions.
Intensive care paramedic Ben Meadley said the men suffered extensive injuries.
"A 24 year-old man
suffered significant blast-type injures
to his legs and hands,
the type of injury you would more liken to
what you would see in a war situation
rather than in outer suburban Melbourne,'' he said.
"He also had severe airway burns and facial burns.''
The man was put into an induced coma
before he was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
A 23-year-old man suffered burns to his face and arms and burns to his airway
which can cause swelling and restrict breathin.

It is one of those things. Sometimes you write
something that seems to touch a chord with readers, and in 25 years of
writing for the SMH, I don't think I have ever had a greater, nor more
poignant response than this piece. All of us have been touched by the
subject of suicide in some measure, and my best hope is that this story
might give hope to those who contemplate it. And I am quite serious, by
the way, about there being a need to have a plaque at the Gap, at the
spot Nellie jumped, telling something of her story.

Oldest fossil found in WA: scientists

Scientists in Western Australia have uncovered fossils
which they say are the oldest evidence of life on earth.

A team of researchers from the University of WA
and Britain's Oxford University say they have proof
that the microscopic fossils, found at Strelley Pool
near Port Headland, are more than 3.4 billion years old.

The sulphur-based bacteria was found well preserved
between quartz sand grains in prehistoric sedimentary rocks,
Oxford University's Professor Martin Brasier said.

"We can be very sure about the age (of the fossils)
as the rocks were formed between two volcanic successions
that narrow the possible age down to a few tens of millions of years,"
he said in a statement.

The fossils are very clearly preserved, showing precise
cell-like structures all of a similar size, the research team said.

"At last we have good solid evidence
for life over 3.4 billion years ago.
It confirms there were bacteria
at this time, living without oxygen,"
Prof Brasier said.

"Such bacteria are still common today.
Sulphur bacteria are found in
smelly ditches, soil, hot springs, hydrothermal
vents -
anywhere where there's little free oxygen
and they can live off organic matter."

In recent years new scientific benchmarks have
been introduced that must be satisfied by researchers
before claims can be made about the age of fossils.
The West Australian fossils pass crucial tests including that
the forms seen in the rocks are biological and have not occurred
through some mineralisation process, Prof Brasier said.

"We're now making detailed comparisons with all other early microfossils,
and we're very optimistic for future finds," he said.
"The work also has implications for looking for life on other planets,
giving an indication of what evidence for such life might look like."
