One third of Australia’s land is desert. Australia has 10 deserts of which the largest is the Great Victoria Desert, covering just under 5 percent of the country. Ironically, the Great Victoria Desert is not located in Victoria but is in Western Australia and South Australia. The Great Victoria Desert covers 348,750 square kilometres which makes it around one and a half times bigger than the UK or slightly smaller than Montana.

Although minor compared to many overseas quakes, the Adelaide earthquake was (at magnitude 5.4) severe enough to cause damage estimated at $350 million (1997 values). No serious injuries were reported.
October 1968, Meckering, Western Australia
One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. Old buildings collapsed, railway lines were buckled and pipelines fractured, and a 37 kilometres long fault scarp (up to 2.5 metres high) was caused. Sixteen injuries were reported and the total cost of damage estimated $50 million.
22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.
28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.
The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.
August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).

Despite Australia's seemingly low-risk situation in the middle of one of Earth's larger tectonic plates, we have had many earthquakes larger than that of Newcastle. The map to the right shows that Australia is in the middle of the Australian-Indian Plate.
The Australian Geological Survey Organisation in Canberra estimates that on average, the Australian region experiences an earthquake of at least this size, or larger, every 13-15 months.
Most of these earthquakes have been in low populated areas, so for many years people thought Australia could not be affected by this natural disaster. The Newcastle experience dispelled this myth!

These are different to the more familiar plate-margin earthquakes, common in areas like California in the USA and in Japan.

A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.
The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years—and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue. " (3)

Belgium credit rating downgraded by S&P
S&P says it considers Belgian government debt
to be at "high levels"
Belgium has had its credit rating downgraded by ratings agency Standard & Poor's.
The country's downgrade could make it more expensive for Belgium to borrow in future.
Belgium's rating was cut by one notch, to AA from AA+, with S&P expressing concerns about funding and market pressures.
The move comes as the eurozone crisis threatens to keep growing, and with continued concerns over Italian debt.
"We think the Belgian government's capacity to prevent an
increase in general government debt, which we consider to be already at
high levels, is being constrained by rapid private sector deleveraging
both in Belgium and among many of Belgium's key trading partners,"
S&P said in a statement.
It also said the outlook was "negative",
meaning Belgium's rating could possibly be cut further in future.
"We need a reply that is clear and credible
if we are to avoid the worst,"
Belgium's caretaker prime minister, Yves Leterme, told
Belgian television after S&P's announcement.

Belgian parties reach 2012 budget deal

BELGIAN politicians reached a deal on the 2012 budget today,
ending a 19-month deadlock that had prevented the formation
of a stable government and led to a debt downgrade,
a negotiator said.
"There is an agreement," said a spokesman for the French-speaking socialists,
one of six parties in the linguistically-divided country that had been struggling
to reconcile spending cuts with tax rises.
The accord, reached after 17 hours of negotiations, opens the way to
forming a new government after 19 months in caretaker management.
Friday night's downgrade by ratings giant Standard and Poor's, which saw
Belgium drop by one notch to AA, piled pressure on the parties to
reconcile spending cuts with tax rises to avoid EU penalties next month.
Internal pressure, though, was at least matched by external strains among wider
eurozone leaders, two weeks from a crunch summit dogged by mounting doubts
over their ability to resolve the debt crisis.

repeated failure of attempts to form a new government," the S&P
statement said.
After Greek, Portuguese and Irish bailouts, and
with Italy, Spain and France now under pressure,
it was more bad news for leaders struggling
in the absence of a European Central Bank
decision to mount a gigantic financial rescue.
The European Commission has repeatedly urged Belgium
to bring its public deficit below 3.0 per cent of GDP by 2012 -
or face a fine of about half a billion euros.
Finance Minister Didier Reynders blamed the downgrade on a
"global loss of confidence" in eurozone public finances,
while insisting that Belgium's creditworthiness remained
"one of the strongest in Europe".
Analysts said the news had wider significance.
"Belgium is the symbolic buffer
between the eurozone periphery and its core,
so this is a sign that the crisis -
slowly, but surely -
is striking at the heart of Europe,"

GUNMEN burst into a restaurant
in Mali's most famous city of Timbuktu overnight,
grabbed four tourists dining there and executed one
when he refused to climb into their truck,
said a witness and an official who inspected the body.
The armed men entered the Amanar restaurant around 2.30pm on Friday
local time and pointed their guns at four tourists dining inside, said
Moussa Boubacar, a client at the restaurant.
The four followed the gunmen outside, but when the gunmen tried to
make them enter a vehicle, one of the tourists refused, Boubacar said.
The kidnappers opened fire, killing him on the spot, Boubacar said.
Their nationalities could not immediately be confirmed,
but witnesses describe them as European.
Dramane Diallo, the regional director of Timbuktu's civil protection division,
said that he rushed to the scene and found the corpse of an elderly white man,
who locals said was the tourist that had refused to enter the car.

Paul Twomey 2007
Paul Twomey
was the Chief Executive Officer and President of the
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) from March 2003 to June 2009.
ICANN is the chief rule-making body
for internet policy worldwide.
Following a private-sector role as
a consultant for McKinsey & Company,
Dr Twomey held executive positions
within the Australian Government's
foreign trade organisation Austrade.
His role there included working on
strategic development and European markets.
He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the
National Office for the Information Economy
(NOIE) in 1997,
a Commonwealth Government unit
responsible for developing Internet policy.
His involvement with ICANN began at this time.
Subsequently he chaired the ICANN
Government Advisory Committee,[1]
which served as the organisation's
liaison with world governments.
Following his departure from NOIE,
Dr Twomey created a consultancy
with Ira Magaziner
(Domestic Policy Adviser
to former US President Bill Clinton)
called Argo P@cific.[2]
He continued to serve on the ICANN GAC until November 2002,
through an ongoing posting as external advisor to
Australia's Commonwealth Government.
Dr Twomey is a member of the
British-North American Committee.
He also serves on the board of directors of the
Atlantic Council of the United States
and chairs the World Economic Forum's
Global Agenda Council on the Future of the Internet.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Queensland,
a Master of Arts from Pennsylvania State University
and a PhD from Cambridge University.
On 27 March 2003 he was elected to his current position at ICANN.
On 2 March 2009, during the opening ceremony of
ICANN's 34th international meeting in Mexico City,
Dr Twomey mentioned that he would be leaving ICANN in June
while remaining as Senior President until the end of the year.[3]
His name has recently been mentioned in relation to

COUNCIL of Europe inspectors have visited the Vatican to monitor its plans to tighten money laundering regulations.
The group from the Moneyval committee "met with representatives of
Vatican authorities dealing with the issue of prevention and fight
against money laundering and terrorist financing," a statement from the
Vatican said.
The group, composed of legal, financial and law enforcement experts
from five countries, arrived on Monday and left overnight, the statement said.
They are expected to present a report with their findings at a plenary session
of Moneyval "presumably in the middle of 2012," the Vatican said.
Pope Benedict XVI last December created a new financial authority
following an embarrassing investigation of Vatican bank officials by Italy.
The Vatican also approved a law from April
imposing sentences of up to
12 years in prison for money laundering
and 15 years for terrorist financing.

THE last train carrying reprocessed nuclear waste back from France
to Germany crossed the border today after being delayed by
demonstrations and steamed towards more trouble.
The train, carrying 11 wagonloads of vitrified radioactive material,
left a siding in the station of Remilly, just outside the town of Metz
and around 30km from the German border, at 7pm (AEDT).
Several hundred French riot police had protected the train overnight, and
around 60 German officers and a French "RAID" team - a SWAT-style
special weapons squad - were on board as it resumed its journey.
The train had left a yard operated by the French nuclear giant Areva in
Valognes, in Normandy, on Wednesday, due to travel more than 1100km
across France and through Germany to the waste dump in Gorleben.
But violent anti-nuclear protests delayed its journey, and authorities
halted it overnight while trying to keep demonstrators guessing about
its eventual route across the border and back into Germany.

Today, it finally crossed the frontier in the border town of Forbach, just south of Saarbrucken, and entered Germany.
Last November a similar controversial shipment took 91 hours to arrive at
its final destination - a day longer than planned - and it was dogged
the length of the route by French and then German protesters.
Around 50,000 activists turned out in Germany to try to disrupt the train
during that transfer, and protest organisers expect 20,000 to demonstrate
against the convoy as it nears the central town of Gorlebenlater on Friday.
Some 19,000 German officers have been deployed, and tear gas and water canon
were fired when clashes erupted overnight when a few hundred protesters tried
to block the line around 20km outside Gorleben.
Spooked by Japan's Fukushima disaster, Germany has decided to phase out its
use
of nuclear power, and thus bring to an end the controversial practice
of sending radioactive waste overland to France for reprocessing.
Anti-nuclear activists want France to follow suit and shut its reactors, an idea
firmly dismissed by President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose government believes
French industry is reliant on cheap nuclear-generated electricity.
There has long been widespread public opposition in Germany to nuclear power,
which environmentalists believe presents an unacceptable radioactive threat
to public health and the environment.
In March, the Japanese nuclear plant at Fukushima Daiichi was hit by an earthquake
and a tsunami, triggering a meltdown and massive radiation leak - and increasing
worldwide concerns over nuclear power.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government agreed to halt German reactors by 2022,
forcing energy suppliers to close plants and levying a tax on fuel.
In the meantime, Germany will no longer send nuclear waste for
reprocessing in France, but will instead stockpile it until a way is
found to make it safe.
France produces 75 per cent of its electricity needs in nuclear plants - a
higher proportion than any other country - and its electricity bills are around
25 per cent cheaper than in its neighbours, a boon to industry.
German protesters are angry that Merkel's announced nuclear phase-out will
take another decade, and that there is still no permanent storage site for the waste generated in the country's reactors.

Belgium credit rating downgraded by S&P
S&P says it considers Belgian government debt
to be at "high levels"
Belgium has had its credit rating downgraded by ratings agency Standard & Poor's.
The country's downgrade could make it more expensive for Belgium to borrow in future.
Belgium's rating was cut by one notch, to AA from AA+, with S&P expressing concerns about funding and market pressures.
The move comes as the eurozone crisis threatens to keep growing, and with continued concerns over Italian debt.
"We think the Belgian government's capacity to prevent an
increase in general government debt, which we consider to be already at
high levels, is being constrained by rapid private sector deleveraging
both in Belgium and among many of Belgium's key trading partners,"
S&P said in a statement.
It also said the outlook was "negative",
meaning Belgium's rating could possibly be cut further in future.
"We need a reply that is clear and credible
if we are to avoid the worst,"
Belgium's caretaker prime minister, Yves Leterme, told
Belgian television after S&P's announcement.

Belgian parties reach 2012 budget deal

BELGIAN politicians reached a deal on the 2012 budget today,
ending a 19-month deadlock that had prevented the formation
of a stable government and led to a debt downgrade,
a negotiator said.
"There is an agreement," said a spokesman for the French-speaking socialists,
one of six parties in the linguistically-divided country that had been struggling
to reconcile spending cuts with tax rises.
The accord, reached after 17 hours of negotiations, opens the way to
forming a new government after 19 months in caretaker management.
Friday night's downgrade by ratings giant Standard and Poor's, which saw
Belgium drop by one notch to AA, piled pressure on the parties to
reconcile spending cuts with tax rises to avoid EU penalties next month.
Internal pressure, though, was at least matched by external strains among wider
eurozone leaders, two weeks from a crunch summit dogged by mounting doubts
over their ability to resolve the debt crisis.

Prime Minister Yves Leterme had made it clear he feared a rout
when markets reopen on Monday if a way forward was not agreed.
"It is blindingly obvious, we have to send a very clear signal... preferably
before the markets open," Mr Leterme had said in a live national
television interview before a shocked Belgian people.
The parties had to work out how to trim 11.3 billion euros ($15.58 billion)
off the deficit next year and about 20 billion euros ($27.58 billion) in all
by 2015.
The ultimatum came days after Mr Leterme's expected successor,
Elio Di Rupo, offered his resignation to Belgium's king,
frustrated at the failure of six-party talks to agree on a
deficit-cutting 2012 budget to avoid EU sanctions.
Albert II rejected the offer and sent Di Rupo back to work.
The ratings blow underlined a sharp escalation of the debt crisis
in a week in which even Germany struggled to raise finance.
Concern is growing that the euro currency, in the absence of
radical pan-eurozone action, is close to breaking point.
"The ability of authorities to respond to potential economic pressures from
inside and outside of Belgium... in our opinion is constrained by the
repeated failure of attempts to form a new government," the S&P
statement said.
After Greek, Portuguese and Irish bailouts, and
with Italy, Spain and France now under pressure,
it was more bad news for leaders struggling
in the absence of a European Central Bank
decision to mount a gigantic financial rescue.
The European Commission has repeatedly urged Belgium
to bring its public deficit below 3.0 per cent of GDP by 2012 -
or face a fine of about half a billion euros.
Finance Minister Didier Reynders blamed the downgrade on a
"global loss of confidence" in eurozone public finances,
while insisting that Belgium's creditworthiness remained
"one of the strongest in Europe".
Analysts said the news had wider significance.
"Belgium is the symbolic buffer
between the eurozone periphery and its core,
so this is a sign that the crisis -
slowly, but surely -
is striking at the heart of Europe,"
Sony Kapoor, head of the Re-Define think tank, told AFP.

GUNMEN burst into a restaurant
in Mali's most famous city of Timbuktu overnight,
grabbed four tourists dining there and executed one
when he refused to climb into their truck,
said a witness and an official who inspected the body.
The armed men entered the Amanar restaurant around 2.30pm on Friday
local time and pointed their guns at four tourists dining inside, said
Moussa Boubacar, a client at the restaurant.
The four followed the gunmen outside, but when the gunmen tried to
make them enter a vehicle, one of the tourists refused, Boubacar said.
The kidnappers opened fire, killing him on the spot, Boubacar said.
Their nationalities could not immediately be confirmed,
but witnesses describe them as European.
Dramane Diallo, the regional director of Timbuktu's civil protection division,
said that he rushed to the scene and found the corpse of an elderly white man,
who locals said was the tourist that had refused to enter the car.

hotspots in Mali that have been deemed too dangerous to visit by foreign
embassies because of kidnappings by the local chapter of al-Qaeda.
The incident overnight comes after two French citizens were grabbed

One of the more serious Australian earthquakes in fairly recent years occurred at the small town of Meckering. Residents reported seeing ground waves as well as experiencing difficulty when driving as the 6.9 Richter magnitude earthquake struck. 22 January 1988, Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
Significant earthquakes of magnitudes 6.3, 6.4 and 6.8 occurred near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. These resulted in large, long ground ruptures and a 35 kilometre fault (up to 2 metre displacement) which warped underground gas pipelines, but caused only minor damage to the hospital and some homes in the town.
28 December 1989, Newcastle, New South Wales
At 10.27am, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, was partially devastated by a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale. The Newcastle earthquake, the first lethal one in Australia, claimed 13 lives.
The devastation to buildings and other structures was extensive, which was unusual for a relatively-small magnitude earthquake. This was due mainly to an underlying, thin layer of alluvium, which appeared to magnify ground motion (shaking). The epicentre was located 15km West Southwest of the city centre, near Boolaroo.
August 1994, Ellalong, New South Wales
A damaging earthquake again affected the Hunter region of NSW, this time in the Ellalong-Cessnock area. Measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale, it became our third most-damaging. Several homes, hotels and other buildings suffered seriously and up to 1,000 homes were partly damaged. Infrastructure, commercial and industrial losses also occurred. Insurance payouts were $38 million and total damage costs exceeded $150 million (1997 values).

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation in Canberra estimates that on average, the Australian region experiences an earthquake of at least this size, or larger, every 13-15 months.
Most of these earthquakes have been in low populated areas, so for many years people thought Australia could not be affected by this natural disaster. The Newcastle experience dispelled this myth!

A future eruption in any of these regions would be unlikely to come from an existing volcano (as the volcanoes there are generally considered to be 'once only’ erupters).
Rather, future eruptions would occur at new sites nearby.

told a news conference on Saturday.
The win - the first parliamentary poll victory for the party -
comes just one month after
Islamists won Tunisia's post-revolution election and
days before their predicted surge in Egyptian polls.
According to the new constitution overwhelmingly approved in a July referendum,
King Mohammed VI must now pick the prime minister from the party which won
the most seats in parliament, instead of naming whomever he pleases.
The king, the latest scion of a monarchy that has ruled the country for
350 years, proposed changes to the constitution that curb some of his
near absolute powers as autocratic regimes toppled in nearby Tunisia,
Egypt, and Libya.

It then increased its share in the last election in 2007
when it finished second with 47 seats.
The party focused at first on social issues, such as
opposition to summer music festivals and the sale of alcohol,
but has shifted to issues with broader voter appeal like the
fight against corruption and high unemployment.
During the current campaign it promised to cut poverty in half and raise the
minimum wage by 50 per cent.
Unlike the banned Islamist opposition group Justice and Charity,
the Justice and Development Party pledges its allegiance to the monarchy.
But Benkirane cuts a controversial figure for previously
derogatory comments about Berber people and homosexuals.
In 2010 he tried to ban a concert in Morocco
by the openly gay singer Elton John because of fears of
encouraging homosexuality.
The National Rally of Independents, the second-largest party in the
outgoing five-party government coalition, won 38 seats,
while the Party of Authenticity and Modernity,
founded in 2008 by people close to the king, got 33 seats.
So far only the Independence Party has said
it would be willing to govern with the Justice and Development Party.
The king proposed a new constitution on March 9, just 17 days after
thousands of people took to the streets across Morocco calling on him
to give up some of his powers in the biggest anti-establishment
protests in the country in decades.
Morocco's pro-reform February 20 protest movement, responsible for the protests,
had called on voters to boycott the elections. It says the constitutional reforms are
insufficient.
Voter turnout was 45.4 per cent, up from 37 per cent
from the last parliamentary election in 2007, but lower than the 51.6
per cent turnout recorded in 2002.
"This turnout, if confirmed, does not reflect enthusiasm for
the new constitution or political parties,"
said Haizam Amirah Fernandez, senior analyst for the Arab world
at Spanish think tank Real Instituto Elcano.
In all, 31 parties competed for the 395 seats in the lower house of parliament -
with 60 seats reserved for women
and 30 set aside for candidates under the age of 40.

A LAW forcing immigrant spouses to speak English before entering Britain
was ruled legitimate yesterday.
Three claimants tried to get the rule overturned, arguing it
interfered with their right to a married life and was racist and discriminatory.
But in a High Court review Mr Justice Beatson dismissed the case, saying
the rule is rational and that even if it does affect married couple’s
lives, it does not override Britain’s right to protect its interests.
Sir Andrew Green of Migration Watch UK said:
“Perhaps we are seeing the dawn of common sense in these immigration cases.”
And Ukip MEP Gerard Batten called the ruling a rare “victory for common sense”.
One of the claimants was British-born Rashida Chapti, 54, whose Indian
husband of 37 years and father of her six children cannot join her in
Leicester because he cannot speak English. She said she plans to appeal.
The other claimants are a couple from Pakistan and another from the Yemen.
The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants said:
“In countries experiencing conflict, poverty, natural disasters,
and political instability, it can be difficult to acquire linguistic skills
prior to arrival in the UK.”
The judicial review was conducted in Birmingham.

POLICE in 22 European countries have arrested 112 suspects for
allegedly sharing online videos of children being sexually abused and
raped, policing agency Europol says.
"So far in 22 countries we have identified 269 suspects with 112
arrests", Europol's director Rob Wainwright said at a press conference
at Europol's headquarters in The Hague today.
"The operation targeted those sharing
the most extreme forms of video material,
which included
babies and toddlers
being sexually abused and raped," he said.
"A lot of the material seized during the house searches is awaiting
forensic examination in order to support follow-up investigations and
possible prosecution of offenders," he said.
In March, police in several countries arrested scores of alleged
members of an online paedophile ring and rescued 230 children
in what Europol called at the time "the biggest case of its kind"
in a network that at one point had almost
70,000 members worldwide.

One of the blasts slightly damaged part of the building in Lamezia Terme,

The four-story building has since 2004 been used as a center for disabled people
run by Father Giacomo Panizza, who has struggled for years against the mafia.
"This seems like a very clear message," said the priest, known locally as Don Panizza.
He said he has received previous death threats from the powerful crime syndicate.
Last year, Panizza added an immigrant children's center to his building. The building
had been previously confiscated from the 'Ndrangheta after the group used it as a front
for drug trafficking.

MESSED OPPORTUNITY
It was a missed opportunity for the mostly naive extremists – and their Greens party allies – to honour their commitments and leave declaring some kind of imaginary success over â€the man’. Instead, in the manner of the spoiled child, they blocked tram lines used by workers to get home and fouled up the City Square, leaving it for Council workers to clean up.
If empowering the “99%” against the “1%” was really the aim, they used and abused a lot of innocent “99%” victims along the way to make a point that no-one has yet articulated and no-one comprehends. For reasons we shall see, some of what lurked behind Occupy Melbourne was much smellier than even the most unwashed sleeping bag.
Naturally the chancers in the increasingly cynical and sleazy Greens political party sniffed the opportunity over the body odour.
A self-appointed leader of the gathering, whose involvement in funny-money “charity” schemes in the past prompt real questions about his own corporate greed that he has failed to answer, Nick Carson was a Greens party political candidate at the last state election and continues as a member.
POWER BANDT
Their current MP for Melbourne, Dr Adam Bandt PhD, who is so nervous about holding his seat that he had his party spend $10,000 of taxpayer-generated funds on Galaxy opinion-polling to rebut claims he was doing a woeful job as a local MP because he’s a regular no-show at community events and has alienated many community groups in inner-Melbourne, jumped all over the Occupy Melbourne sleeping bag, declaring it was a “blunder” to move the protesters on.
Bandt was supportive of Occupy Melbourne, opining:
“It is no wonder that people are protesting. The richest 20% of households in Australian have 60 times the wealth of the poorest 20% of Australians. CEOs are getting huge pay increases and banks are posting record profits.”
But Bandt is part of the problem of which he complains. He is Mr 1% in a suit with a smug grin. He flies first class, at taxpayer expense. He employed his girlfriend in his MP’s office at public expense. He then got her another cushy job. He is paid nearly $4000 a week to serve as an MP. He is chauffeured around to the airport in a V8 luxo-barge ComCar.
He does not eat his own mung-bean cooking of the revolution.
And who could blame him?
KEEPING IT REAL
We don’t think MP’s are paid excessively or should lose perks that perhaps slightly compensate for all the crap that gets thrown at them but we do ask wannabe revolutionaries to be consistent and live the words they preach.
That Socialist Party Yarra councillor Steve Jolly is a shocker. He wants to reinstate socialism in the world, despite a rather embarrassing experiment where whole countries were held back in a mire of waste and indolence for decades with millions of people sent to gulags, persecuted and murdered by the system that pretended to be a “worker’s paradise”. In PR terms, we might call this something of a setback, perhaps slightly “diminishing brand equity” as they might say on St Kilda Road.
But Jolly slings back his council honorarium – and is apparently required to by his comrades – to the party whose dead horse he so sincerely flogs and only receives a “living wage.”
If the Greens did that rather than pretend to be groovy revolutionaries while flying around like pampered poodles, they’d be more convincing. Jolly may be wrong but the Greens are wrong while being frauds of the most outrageous kind.
WORKERS UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED
Meanwhile, there are workers who do it tough. One group of them – highly unionised – have very high levels of workplace injury and trauma. Most of them get around $60,000 to $70,000 per annum, maybe a little more with overtime. They risk their lives, many of them, every time they go out on the job.
Yep, it’s the Police.
They are working people.
But state Greens MP Colleen Hartland wasn’t impressed. She told her friends at The Age:
“Police in riot gear just started to push me and once that happened I decided that I would be joining in.”
They were doing their job. They did so very cautiously, deliberately and responsibly in circumstances that ought never have been necessary because the protesters ought to have packed up, cheered themselves through the drizzle and declared a victory of some kind over the “man.”
It’s worth contemplating why they didn’t.
It’s because at the heart of the leadership of Occupy Melbourne were the truly, raving mad. And, even worse, vile and dangerous anti-Semites and neo-Nazis.
A key Occupy Melbourne organiser was Tina Athanasopoulos. She set up its Facebook page, gave interviews on 3CR representing them and so on.
And who is this Tina Athanasopoulos?
She’s a devotee of David Icke. VEXNEWS has obtained Facebook entries made by her in a private David Icke group, where she assured members of his group that she was a central player in the Occupy Melbourne and that she would ensure Icke’s views were advanced.
David Icke, apparently touring the nation at the moment, is a leading conspiracy theorist who expounds views including according to Wikipedia:
At the heart of his theories lies the idea that the world is becoming a global fascist state, that a secret group of reptilian humanoids called the Babylonian Brotherhood controls humanity, and that many prominent figures are reptilian, including George W. In 1996, he spoke to a conference in Reno, Nevada, alongside opponents of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act—which mandates background checks on people who buy guns in the United States—including Kirk Lyons, a white nationalist lawyer who has represented the Ku Klux Klan. Barkun argues that the relationship between Icke, the militias, and the Christian Patriots is complex because of the New Age baggage Icke brings with him, and he stresses that Icke is not actually a member of any of these groups, but he has nevertheless absorbed the world view of the radical right virtually intact.
and, as such, he doesn’t think much of the Jews:
In The Robots’ Rebellion (1994), Icke introduced the idea that the Global Elite’s plan for world domination was laid out in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a hoax published in Russia in 1903, which supposedly presented a plan by the Jewish people to take over the world. sent a confusing message to the country.
There have been calls for the introduction of photo ID,

to make it easier to locate valuable minerals.
Professor Bill Collins, of the University of Newcastle's School of Environmental and
Life Sciences, says he has devised a new "billion-year perspective" that examines
the way the Earth was constructed over the past 2000 million years.
The information can be used to try to pinpoint the location
of potential mineral deposits.
"We can use continental drift and other techniques
to track the continents back through time," Prof Collins said today.
"It is like a big jigsaw puzzle
with bits and pieces of continents
ripping off one landmass
and transferring to another."
Prof Collins believes the Pacific Rim
contains many copper and gold deposits.
Examining geological information contained in tiny grains of zircon,
which is common in the crust of the Earth, has also given him a new way
to find where the ancient "Pacific Rims" were.
"Many of the ancient margins are now within the continental interior.
This is where the copper and gold reserves will be hidden."
Prof Collins said the ability to predict prospective terrains,
both under the surface and in the highest geological layers,
will be the biggest benefit of his research.

TOKYO has eased a decades-old self-imposed ban on arms exports,
paving the way for Japanese firms to participate in multinational
weapons projects.
In a move intended to bolster the domestic arms industry and
reduce national defence spending, officially pacifist Japan will for
the first time in decades routinely allow its companies to partner with
foreign firms to develop weapons.
"Under the new standards, Japan will be able to transport military equipment
for missions of peace-building and international co-operation," Foreign Minister
Koichiro Gemba told reporters today.
"This will mean that Japan can now address
international peace co-operation
and global challenges such as terrorism and piracy
more proactively and effectively."
Japan, whose industries took many years to recover from the devastation of
World War II, declared in 1967 that it would very tightly control its
foreign weapons sales.

Tokyo would not sell armaments to communist states, countries directly
engaged in international conflicts, or nations under UN arms embargoes.
The restrictions were further tightened in 1976 when Japan said all exports
would be subject to stringent rules that effectively barred all weapon sales.
A limited number of exceptions were subsequently made for technological
co-operation projects such as missile defence with the United States, Japan's
cornerstone security ally.
The new rules will allow Japan to develop and produce arms jointly with the US
and European countries and to export military equipment for peaceful and
humanitarian purposes such as UN peace-keeping operations.
Tokyo will also be allowed to provide defensive equipment, such as helmets and
bullet-proof vests, to the limited number of countries in which its Self-Defence Forces
are deployed.
Critics of the ban say it was a Cold War relic that has resulted in Japan's military

overloaded asylum seeker boat that sank this month killing as many as
200 people.
Indonesian police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution has told Fairfax
newspapers that investigators have given the name of the man to
Australian Federal Police after several survivors identified him.
"We have passed on the name of the Australian man - Mr X - to the AFP
to follow up," Inspector-General Nasution said.
But an AFP spokeswoman told Fairfax that
"the AFP has not received a referral from the Indonesian national police".
"The AFP has made no arrests in relation to this matter
and this is a matter for the Indonesian authorities," she said.
Told of the AFP comments, General Nasution insisted the name
had been passed on and the investigation was a joint effort by
both countries' law enforcement agencies.
Four Indonesian soldiers have been detained for their involvement
with two local owners of small boats used to ferry the asylum seekers to
their "mother ship" at sea, but there have been reports indicating more
security personnel and officials were involved.
General Nasution said multiple suspects had been identified in Indonesia and in
"countries of origin", understood to be Pakistan and Iran.

AS many as 16,000 Australians got away with voting more than once in the 2010 razor's edge federal poll.
Dozens may have voted three times or more, but only three copped a slap on the wrist.
The Australian Electoral Commission has admitted to a Senate committee its
own records make it difficult to tell who is flouting electoral laws.
And it has been revealed little can be done if voters deny it.
Of the 16,189 people the AEC suspected of multiple votes, 5211 denied it
and 80 per cent of the 1458 who confessed were new voters or did not
understand how to vote.
It was decided 7925 were errors, many caused when
voters with similar names were recorded under the same name by accident.
Electoral Commissioner Ed Killesteyn told the committee the offence was
hard to prove as there was no real evidence if a person denied the offence.
Victorian Liberal senator Scott Ryan said the lack of prosecution
sent a confusing message to the country.
There have been calls for the introduction of photo ID,
with some seats won or lost on just a few votes.

The full story that you don't know,is her husband,Bill/William Ryan,a serving detective in Victorian Police Force,was lied about by her,cause he got a vasectomy (smart husband),a divorce and took the kids for a few years.She was on her own...WHY?
She set him up as drug dealer,animal and baby rapist,all of which came to no avail.But the heinous low life creature she is,installed child-porn and tried to set him up for it.But,Police being trained in psyche,that they are,realized she's just a schizophrenic patient and let her be,giving the stupid old tart license to continue to be a menace to society and herself.
